Blog - How do I calculate a gas spring?

Not sure which gas spring to choose? In this blog post we explain how to apply the correct calculation for your gas springs. To calculate gas springs you need the following data (see drawing below):

  • Weight of the object to be moved
  • The horizontal distance between the pivot point (S) and the center of gravity of the weight (Z) in mm. (A)
  • The perpendicular distance between the gas spring (0) in extended position and the pivot point (S) on the same solid line in mm. (K)

Parameters of gas spring

Below you will find all the information you need to determine the installation of a gas spring. To calculate the force, the final data of G, S, K and A are needed to calculate (F)orce.

G = Weight valve (kg)
Z = Application point of the weight (G) of the valve
S = Hinge of valve
D = Pivot point of the gas spring on the valve
O = Pivot point gas spring on the fixed frame
A = Horizontal distance of center of gravity, pivot point
K = Torque arm = perpendicular distance gas spring versus hinge (S)
X = Distance to be traveled before pivot point (D) of the gas spring
F = Extension force of the gas spring

Gas spring calculation formula

Now that all the data is known, we apply the following formula to calculate the force in KG:

F = (( G x A ) : K ) + 10%

* The 10% is surcharge. The surcharge is always required as a safety margin. This 10% is also necessary, especially with snow loads and/or gusts of wind. The safety margin must always be adhered to.

To rein'force' the formula, we have the following examples:

Example gas spring calculation 1

Example gas spring calculation 2

G

50 KG

40 KG

A

700 mm

500 mm

K

250 mm

200 mm

Drawing

Voorbeeld gasveren berekenen 1 Voorbeeld gasveren berekenen 2

Formula:

F = ((50 x 700) : 250 ) +10%

F = ((40 x 500) : 200 ) + 10%

Result

F = 154 KG

F = 110 KG

From KG to Newton

154 * 10 = 1.540 Newton

110 * 10 = 1.100 Newton

* 1 kg to N = 9.80665 N

When the number of Newtons has been calculated, it is time to choose the right gas spring. For example 1, there are no standard gas springs available. But if the installation allows it, it is possible to install 2 gas springs of 770 N here. Or you can send a request to sales@tevema.com to have a certain gas spring filled so that the 1,750 N gas spring delivers 1,540 N.

In the second example, we are looking for gas springs that can yield 1,100 N. These are standard gas springs. It is also possible (if designed) to place two gas springs of 550 Newton here, or to place four gas springs of 275 Newton. As long as the final forces add up to the same, many designs are possible.

Would you like to order gas springs?

You can order standard and custom-made gas springs from the spring specialist. All gas springs can be filled to the desired force (not higher than the specified force). At Tevema you can order gas pressure springs, gas tension springs and adjustable gas pressure springs easily and quickly. All gas springs are fitted with eyes as standard. Gas springs are also available with other fasteners. Order the gas spring together with the fastener and we will install it for you.
